Let's send less to landfill!
Every year millions of tonnes of commercial waste goes straight to landfill.
We all play our part: each time we eat lunch at our desks and throw the sandwich wrapper or drink bottle straight in the bin we're adding to the waste.
At M&S, we sell more sandwiches and lunchtime snacks than anyone else on the high street, so it seems only right that we take action
That's why, as part of our Plan A commitments, we've teamed up with Closed Loop Recycling to help you set up your own office recycling scheme.
If the facilities are available in your area, you'll be able to throw all your recyclable rubbish in the same bin without having to separate it - and everything that would have gone straight to landfill will be recycled or reprocessed instead.
Obviously, to be recycled the packaging needs to be recyclable. As you'd expect, nearly all our Food to Go packaging - 90% - is recyclable (the other 10% - things like confectionery and crisp packaging - can't be recycled anywhere in the UK).
At the Closed Loop Recycling plant, the first in the UK, opening in July, appropriate packaging is turned into food grade flake, which in turn is used to make new packaging. So your M&S smoothie bottle will go through the system and come back as new M&S packaging!
Closed Loop Recycling are launching the scheme, supported by your M&S, in Greater London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester and hope to roll it out to all regions by 2010.
